What is included in a fiber optic link budget?

This calculator adds fiber attenuation, mated-connection loss, splice loss, and other passive-device loss, then compares that total with the entered transmitter and receiver specifications.

Which values do I use from a transceiver optical power range?

Use the lower TX value as minimum transmitter output for the sensitivity and link-margin check. Use the higher TX value as maximum transmitter output for the receiver-overload check. Enter receiver sensitivity as the low-power limit and receiver overload as the high-power limit, preserving negative signs.

Can I calculate passive loss without transceiver data?

Yes. The calculator reports a REVIEW state and the passive link loss. Enter minimum transmitter power and receiver sensitivity when available to verify operating and engineering margin.

Does the calculator check excessive receiver power?

Yes, when the equipment specification provides a maximum receiver input. The calculator flags a link whose estimated receiver power exceeds that limit.

How to use this calculator

Choose the fiber type, wavelength, and installed length.
Count connectors, splices, splitters, and other passive losses.
Add the equipment specifications from the transmitter and receiver data sheets.
Review passive loss, expected receiver power, and remaining margin.
Export the verified plan or share a restorable link.

You may leave the equipment fields blank for a passive-loss-only review. Enter both transmitter power and receiver sensitivity when checking link margin.
