Cable tray planning guidance
Fill capacity is only one part of tray selection
Select the calculation method that governs the actual cable installation. Confirm the adopted requirements, cable classification, tray load rating, support span, separation, grounding, and manufacturer data. See the methodology.
What cable tray fill methods are available?
Use cross-sectional area for a documented percentage-based control, signal, or data cable workflow, or single-layer width when the cable arrangement must be evaluated by the sum of cable diameters.
Can I allow for loose, twisted, or bunched cables?
Yes. Installation allowance defaults to 0%, and the user may select 10%, the recommended 20% typical-field allowance, 30%, or a custom percentage. The calculator reports geometric and allowance-adjusted planning demand separately. This is a planning assumption, not a code-mandated fill factor.
Are manufacturer cable trays included?
Yes. The library includes published tray dimensions for Eaton B-Line, Legrand Cablofil, nVent HOFFMAN, Hubbell, and Snake Tray products, plus custom dimensions. Confirm the exact catalog number and usable dimensions before specifying equipment.
Does the calculator verify tray structural loading?
No. Cable fill and cable weight are separate from tray load class and support span. Verify the selected product's load rating, support arrangement, fittings, and manufacturer requirements.
