Why One 4-Inch EMT Can Hold More Cable Than Four 2-Inch EMT Conduits

Conduit capacity is determined by cross-sectional area—not by adding trade-size labels. Using the verified EMT dimensions in Conduit Calculator Pro, one 4-inch EMT provides approximately 9.9% more internal area than four 2-inch EMT conduits combined.

The result at a glance

At a 40% fill criterion, one 4-inch EMT provides approximately 5.901 in² of available cable area. Four 2-inch EMT conduits provide approximately 5.369 in² combined. The single 4-inch EMT therefore supplies about 0.532 in² more usable area under this comparison.

Why adding conduit diameters gives the wrong answer

A common assumption is that two 2-inch conduits must equal one 4-inch conduit because 2 + 2 = 4. That calculation compares labels along a line. Cable capacity, however, depends on the area inside a circle. The area grows with the square of the diameter:

Area = π × (inside diameter ÷ 2)²

Doubling a circle’s diameter produces approximately four times its area when the actual inside diameter also doubles. Conduit trade sizes are nominal identifiers rather than exact inside diameters, so real product dimensions must be used.

The calculation

  1. One 4-inch EMT: π × (4.334 ÷ 2)² = 14.753 in² internal area.
  2. One 2-inch EMT: π × (2.067 ÷ 2)² = 3.356 in² internal area.
  3. Four 2-inch EMTs: 4 × 3.356 = approximately 13.422 in² combined internal area.
  4. Difference: 14.753 − 13.422 = approximately 1.330 in², or 9.9% more internal area.
  5. At 40% fill: 14.753 × 0.40 = 5.901 in² for the 4-inch EMT, compared with 13.422 × 0.40 = 5.369 in² across the four 2-inch EMTs.

What about two 2-inch conduits?

Two 2-inch EMT conduits provide approximately 6.711 in² of total internal area, which is less than half of the 14.753 in² available inside one 4-inch EMT. At 40% fill, the comparison is approximately 2.684 in² versus 5.901 in². Two 2-inch conduits are therefore not a capacity-equivalent replacement for one 4-inch EMT.

Capacity is not the only design consideration

More calculated area does not automatically make one large conduit the best project choice. Multiple smaller pathways can provide cable separation, redundancy, phased installation, easier routing, or dedicated systems. Pull length, bends, cable stiffness, pulling tension, sidewall pressure, jamming risk, spare capacity, firestopping, cost, and project specifications must also be considered.

This comparison applies specifically to the listed EMT dimensions and the same fill percentage on both configurations. Other raceway types and manufacturer dimensions can produce different values.
