THHN/THWN-2 conductor capacity by EMT size
Each cell is the maximum number of identical conductors supported by the stated inputs. The calculation applies 53% for one conductor, 31% for two, and 40% for more than two, including the applicable identical-conductor rounding provision. Counts include every conductor in the raceway—not only current-carrying conductors.

Worked example: 12 AWG THHN in 1/2-inch EMT
The selected stranded 12 AWG conductor has an approximate outside diameter of 0.130 inch. Its calculated outside area is 0.01327 square inch. Nine conductors occupy 0.11946 square inch.
The verified 1/2-inch EMT model has 0.304 square inch of internal area. Because there are more than two conductors, 40% provides 0.1216 square inch. Nine conductors use 39.3% of the conduit's total internal area and fit within that limit; a tenth identical conductor would exceed it.
The calculation behind every table cell
- Conductor outside area = π × (manufacturer outside diameter ÷ 2)².
- Available conduit area = EMT internal area × the percentage for the total conductor count.
- Identical-conductor capacity = available conduit area ÷ one conductor's outside area, followed by the applicable whole-number rule.
Mixed conductor sizes require adding the occupied area of every conductor instead of reading one maximum-quantity cell.
The equipment grounding conductor counts
If an equipment grounding or bonding conductor is installed in the EMT, include its physical area in conduit fill. A table entry of nine does not mean nine circuit conductors plus an additional ground; it means nine total conductors when all nine have the size and product shown. Use the calculator for mixed phase, neutral, and grounding conductor sizes.
Conduit fill does not complete the electrical design
A passing area calculation does not determine conductor ampacity, current-carrying-conductor count, adjustment or correction factors, terminal limitations, overcurrent protection, grounding size, bend radius, pulling tension, sidewall pressure, or the suitability of the raceway system. Review those requirements separately. Length, bends, conductor alignment, and pulling conditions can also justify a larger raceway or lower fill.

Does the ground wire count toward conduit fill?
Yes. An equipment grounding or bonding conductor installed in the raceway occupies space and must be included in the conduit-fill calculation using the applicable conductor dimensions.
Is conduit fill the same as ampacity adjustment?
No. Conduit fill measures physical area. Ampacity adjustment and correction depend on separate conditions such as the number of current-carrying conductors and ambient temperature. Both reviews may apply to the same installation.
